Dr. Mustafa has developed diverse spectrum of multidisciplinary research skills in materials development, membrane science and engineering, as well as water and wastewater treatment. He has published one patent, a considerable number of publications in leading journals in the field, including Water Research Journal and Journal of Membrane Science, and has presented his work in major international conferences, as well as networking with industrial and academic partners. His highly innovative PhD work on the development of efficient antifouling graftings of ceramic membranes for applications for wastewater treatment and drinking water led to awards of “2nd Best Poster Presentation” prize (Nano4Water Cluster 2015, Spain) for exploring new insight into membrane fouling mechanism and “EMS” prize (XXXI EMS Summer School, 2014, Rende, Italy) for the novel functional of ceramic nanofiltration membranes which established Dr. Mustafa as an emerging leading researcher on membrane separation technologies. His PhD work was highly multidisciplinary and running parallel to an EU FP7 CeraWater project. Dr. Mustafa has exhibited international mobility including Flemish Institute for Technological Research in Belgium and Leibniz Institute of Surface Modification Leipzig, Forschungszentrum Juelich Germany as well as experience in the chemicals industry. He has continued to develop his skills and expertise to high level in diverse range of characterisation tools in chromatography, spectroscopy, microscopy, thermal analysis, which positions him ideally to explore the unique opportunities offered by 2D nanomaterials. Dr. Mustafa is on a clear path to develop his skills and experience needed to successfully achieve an independent academic position, having already (co) and supervised a considerate number of master and undergraduate students. He has attracted successful funding (competitive VITO research grant) for his ideas to explore hybrid organic-inorganic materials/membranes utilised in separation and purification applications.
