Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman Elected President of Pakistan Academy of Sciences for Third Time

Renowned Pakistani scientist Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman has been elected President of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS) for the third time. Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman has previously served twice as President of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, from 2003 to 2006 and again from January 2011. He has now been elected President of the Academy for a third time, unopposed.
According to a spokesman for the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman is a prominent Pakistani organic chemist, Professor Emeritus at ICCBS, University of Karachi, and a former Federal Minister for Science and Technology.
It is pertinent to mention that the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, established in 1953, is a premier non-governmental learned society of distinguished scientists. It serves as a scientific advisory body to the Government of Pakistan and promotes the advancement of science and technology for the socio-economic development of the country.
Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman is Pakistan’s most decorated scientist, having received the country’s four highest civil awards: Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, Sitara-i-Imtiaz, Hilal-i-Imtiaz, and Nishan-i-Imtiaz.
Internationally, he has received numerous prestigious distinctions, including Fellowship of the Royal Society (London), the UNESCO Science Prize, the TWAS Prize for Institution Building, and a high civil award from the Austrian Government.
In recognition of his outstanding scientific collaboration with China, he was also conferred the People’s Republic of China’s International Science and Technology Cooperation Award, the country’s highest scientific distinction for foreign scientists. He was also elected an Academician (Foreign Member) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Several research centres in China, Malaysia, and Pakistan have been named in his honour, including the Academician Professor Atta-ur-Rahman One Belt and One Road TCM Research Center in Hunan, China, and the Atta-ur-Rahman Institute on Natural Product Discovery (AuRINS) in Malaysia.
